Why I Reach For: L'Oreal Voluminous Miss Manga

A mini review of why I constantly reach for my L'Oreal Voluminous Miss Manga mascara.

1. Drugstore product.  I prefer not to splurge on mascara because 1) I don't keep open mascara for more than 3 months even if not fully finished, 2) drugstore mascara is usually better and 3) drugstore mascara is definitely cheaper.  I picked up the Miss Manga mascara for around $7.00

2. The blackest black.  In my mind mascara should be black, very black.  The black color of this mascara is so dark that it really makes your eyelashes stand out against your eye makeup.  I like the "false lashes" look of this mascara without actually having to wear false lashes.

3. Not too much smudging. For me any mascara and eye makeup tends to smudge.  However, after a full days wear I don't have too much collecting under my eyes and for that I am thankful.

4. Flexible wand. Not only is the shape of this mascara wand super interesting, it is also highly flexible.  I think the flexible wand is really handy and being able to manipulate the wand placement means less poking my eye and no more mascara ending up on my face instead of my lashes

5. (Fairly) clumpless.  Will there every be a truly clumpless mascara?  I doubt it.  But as long as a mascara isn't too clumpy I am happy.  This is probably the best of the bunch I've tried recently.  One coat of this mascara glides on easily and evenly and doesn't make eyelashes stick together.

Weekly Wants #2

1. MAC Lustering Lipstick.  Lily talked about it.  I want it.

2. Kiehl's Ultra Facial Moisturizer.  Must finish current moisturizer first but I've gone to several Kiehl's counters and stocked up on samples of this to hoard in the meantime.

3. Ed Sheeran X. I love Ed Sheeran and loved his first album from first listen.  Some of the new songs I've heard haven't quite caught my attention as much as I thought they would but since it's Ed Sheeran I know I will eventually love it.

4. Topshop Palm Tree Pajamas.  Seriously bad photo.  Seriously awesome pajamas.  And I own basically no summer themed pajamas so I think that counts as a reason to get them.

Quick Trip Up North: The Essentials

Carry on luggage packing can be quite the task.  Luckily, in the last year I've become extremely efficient at packing my skincare and makeup bits without taking up too much room in my carry on.  I packed this super cute Sephora in flight bag with all of my liquids and it definitely looks better than a plain ol' zip lock bag.  Be warned though, you can't stuff it full of products like you can a zip lock.

Oribe Shampoo & Conditioner / Dermophil

My tips for carry on packing: Pack as many samples of products as possible and be extremely selective with makeup products. I've incorporated a sample product for all steps in my skincare routine except for cleansers which I decanted into small pots.  For makeup, I packed only one of each type of product I use on a daily basis, except for lip products where I have a neutral and bold product packed.

Now to finish the boring packing and then I'm off!

Weekly Wants #1

I thought I would start a little series of posts on here called 'Weekly Wants', a collection of four items that catch my eye over the week.   I am by no means a big shopper so even though I may want or like many things, I probably buy less than 1% of what I am interested in.  My mom calls me frugal but I just have extreme buyer's guilt.  With that said, if I had unlimited money or found a cure for my buyer's guilt here is what I would pick up this week:

1. Jurlique Rosewater Balancing Mist.  I have a long list of hydrating spray toners I want to check out and this is just the latest one to make the list.

2. Madewell Comme ci Comme ca Banded Tee. Saw this in Madewell the other day and like everything in that store it called out to me.

3. The Silkworm by Robert Galbraith.  J.K. Rowling sequel under another name.  Say no more.

4. Valentino Studded Leather Biker Boots. Probably the most gorgeous boots I've ever seen.  They also have one steep price tag.

The Makeup Timer Test

The other day I was checking out Lily Pebbles' blog, as I do everyday, and I was really excited to see that she created a blog tag.  I've done a YouTube tag as a blog post, but it felt weird to write since I was used to seeing it in video form.  When I saw Lily's I knew I had to do this post.  I fully expected to have the world's longest time for putting on makeup because even though I enjoy applying makeup it aways seems to take forever, at least in my mind.  Turns out it my time wasn't as bad as I was imagining it to be. However my current makeup routine is fairly light.  I will definitely not be timing myself when I do a going out look!

Total Time: 8 minutes 46 seconds

Thanks Lily for creating a tag just for us bloggers!

Blush Collection & Top 5 Favorites

My absolute favorite makeup item has to be blush!  I definitely went through a phase in high school where I was called the lip gloss queen because I had so, so, so many.  However, that has died down now and my real love has become blush.  I always need a little bit of blush to give me some color and make me look alive.  That in turn has lead me to gather a little collection, all of which I use, although I certainly have favorites of the bunch.  Below are my can't live without blushes.

Hourglass Ambient Lighting Blush in Luminous Flush.  I've talked about this in several posts, so I won't carry on except to say this is the best of the best.

Nars Blush in Sin.  My ultimate winter color.  Berry toned with a hint of gold and glimmer and builds up nicely from a gentle sheen to a bold look.

YSL Blush Radiance in 6. I tried this blush on several times in the store before buying and finally I had to have it.  It can be quite red, however it is very flattering on the skin and blends nicely.

Milani Rose Powder Blush in 02 Flora Passion.  It was love at first sight when I saw this in store.  This is my everyday, natural pink blush.  When I can't decide what blush to use or what sort of look I am going for, I always reach for this one.  I don't want to use it too much because I don't want the pretty rose design to go away.

Hourglass Aura Sheer Check Stain in Rouge .  Second Hourglass product because they are so good. I don't reach for my cream blushes near enough but when I use this one I am reminded of how good it is.  Another dark, berry colored blush that blends in so nicely and leaves a fantastic finish on the skin.  I like to build this product up so it lasts a little while longer.

A Trip to Lather

On the heels of last weeks bath post (here), is a trip to one of my favorite stores for bath and body products... Lather!  Lather is a Pasadena based company that sells great bath, body, face and hair products made from natural ingredients in simple, clean packaging.  I discovered this store a little over a year ago and whenever I am in Pasadena I try to stop in and pick up a few things.   The other day I was in the area for a legal seminar and to reward myself for paying attention the whole time I decided to go in and browse... and we all know that leads to spending money!  For me, Lather's standout products are body scrubs. Since good body scrubs are hard to come by, I of course went straight for those in the store.  I was slightly disappointed as I wanted to try their new scrub that contains rice and green tea but they didn't have it in stock yet.  Here's what I picked up instead:

* Glow on the Go Body Scrub Travel Set
* Pink Grapefruit & Ginger Sugar Scrub
* Chamomile Foaming Bath Treatment
* Citrus Balancing Toner

Glow on the Glow Body Scrub Travel Set
Almond Creme Body Buff - Bamboo Lemongrass Foaming Body Scrub
Cranberry Sugar Scrub - Yuzu Sugar Cane Body Scrub

I can't wait to use all these products, especially because when you empty a container you can bring it back to the store and get 10% off your next purchase.  Definitely an incentive for me to go back!

What I Loved: May 2014

Monthly favorites time... and this month I actually shopped my stash and incorporated quite a few different products into my routine.  Here are the one's that got the most love:

Maybelline Color Tattoo Eyeshadow in Bad to the Bronze - I recently reorganized my makeup collection (post on that coming soon) and now my cream eyeshadows/bases are nicely displayed, which means I pick them up to use a heck of a lot more than usual.  Nothing super fancy to say about this product because everyone knows how good it is.  Works as a base for other shadows and a great wash of color all over the lid when you are in a hurry.  I like to apply it with my fingers and then blend it out with a brush.

Fresh Sugar Rose Lip Treatment - I've been trying to incorporate more products with sun protection into my daily routine and as I was going through all my lip products I noticed that this has a small amount of SPF in it.  I wear this most days at some point because it is easy to apply and the color is great, although I do tend to pat it in a bit to make it a bit more natural looking.

Clarins Beauty Flash Balm - I have a love hate relationship with this product and I'm not really sure why.  Right now it's love.  Recently I've needed my makeup to last longer than usual so I've been going through my primer samples to see what I get the best results from.  I (almost always) love the color, texture and smell of this product; it really does feel silky smooth on the skin!

Maybelline Brow Drama Sculpting Brow Mascara in Medium Brown - My neighbor is a flight attendant and flies to London once a week.  Every so often, or perhaps more than I would like to admit, I ask her to pick up beauty products from Boots and Superdrug that I can't get in America.  This is the latest product I had her pick up and I really like it.  The wand is almost circular in shape, quite small and it covers the width of my brow nicely.  It isn't the longest lasting of products but it is a really nice product to have around for when you are on the go.

Maybelline Instant Age Rewind Dark Circle Eraser - This concealer is brilliant! I was originally put off this product because of the packaging and weird twist up applicator but I'm so glad I finally tried it. The product itself is really creamy, especially for a drugstore product, and does a fantastic job of covering the under eye area.  I also have the dark spot concealer that I use on blemishes, acne scars and the lovely scar on my nose right now and it works just as well as the under eye concealer.

Random Favorite - Thought I would throw in a non-beauty favorite this month.  My jewelry collection is almost entirely made up of J.Crew jewelry.  I had my eye on this green colored necklace for quite awhile and recently it turned up in the sales.  (Secret: I only shop J. Crew during sales.  I'm not talking the sale markdown section in the back of the store.  I'm talking that section + the sale on that sale, which is usually 30-50% depending on the time of year, + student discount of 15%! Yep, it is indeed possible to shop in J. Crew without spending tons of money!)  This necklace is perfect for summer and adds some color into my extremely neutral wardrobe.  Bonus?  You are sure to get tons of compliments when you have J. Crew jewelry on!
