Faraway Friday #2

Crater Lake, Oregon - I lived in the Pacific Northwest for 4 years and never went to Crater Lake, though it was always something I wanted to do.  Luckily Oregon isn't too far away.  I'd love to take a summer road trip up the 5 to see this beauty in real life.
Ryman Auditorium, Nashville TN - As a country music lover, and a lover of Southern food, Nashville has been on my radar for a long time.  When I finally visit Nashville I plan on working the trip around a concert at the Ryman.
Dublin, Ireland - I was meant to go to Ireland with my brother a few years back and since the idea popped into my head I haven't been able to get rid of it.  Anything involving pubs, castles and accents is ok in my book.
Cabo, Mexico - I've lived in Southern California almost my entire life and I have never been to Mexico.  After seeing so many instagram photos of gorgeous beaches and beautiful resorts in Cabo I think I've finally decided on my first Mexico trip.

Springtime Empties

Rituals Himalaya Wisdom Scrub Salt - fabulous, fabulous, fabulous.  Leans more towards a harsh scrub, but doesn't dry out the skin because of the fairly oily formula. Afterwards you are left with smooth skin and no reason to apply body lotion

When Travelmate - After a trip to New York City my skin was extremely parched and irritated and this sheet mask sorted out all my skin issues in no time.  This mask packs a punch - first it soothes skin while you are wearing it and then the leftover product on the skin acts as an overnight treatment

Omorovicza Thermal Cleansing Balm - used when my skin was acting up, it did slightly clean out congested pores and brighten skin overall, but it doesn't have immediate or long lasting results

Lather Chamomile Foaming Bath Treatment - any product meant to soothe and put you to sleep is worth a try in my book.  Not powerful enough to induce sleep but after a thirty minute bath I felt extremely relaxed

Organic Surge Gentle Cleansing Lotion - one of the best cleansers I've tried.  Simple, cheap and mostly natural ingredients.   A good morning cleanser for removing overnight products and preps skin for a days worth of makeup

Marc Jacobs Daisy Eau So Fresh - when I initially purchased this perfume I loved it because of its light, fresh scent.  However, my scent preferences have changed and I don't feel it is enough of a grown up, womanly scent which I tend to go for now (current fav is Giorgio Armani Si)

Mirenesse Secret Weapon 24Hr Mascara - how do I put this lightly?... this was horrible.  I received this as a Birchbox sample and after one use it went straight into the trash.  Maybe I got a dud but it was extremely watery.  I don't know about you but a mascara wand shouldn't have product dripping off of it

Laura Mercier Full Blown Volume Lash Building Mascara - doesn't do what the name claims it does but still a really great mascara if you are looking for soft definition with no clumps for everyday wear.  Not dramatic enough for a night/event look

Lather Cranberry Sugar Rub - lather can do wrong - this is another awesome product that I finished way too fast.  The scrub warms as you apply it and gently exfoliates the skin.  The exfoliating beads are very small but not harsh which means this scrub is great for using every few days to keep dry patches in check

Making the Switch to Natural Antiperspirant & Aluminum-Free Deodorants

I don't proclaim to be a natural beauty product junkie but recently I decided I would start switching over a few of my products to cut out excess chemicals since I do tend to use a lot of beauty products. The first thing I replaced was deodorant at the suggestion of my chiropractor.  But of course the lawyer in me couldn't just take her word for it, I need some information and had to do some research. Here are the two convincing factors that lead me to make a switch:
  • antiperspirant - clogs pores to prevent perspiration.  The built up sweat bacteria that hasn't been released actually causes odor problems
  • parabens - antiperspirants and deodorants have parabens which many believe cause a wide array of problems.  In deodorant it is thought to contribute to breast cancer as parabens have estrogenic activity on breast cells
Thirty days into natural deodorant and I'm glad I switched.  I've had no side effects, I don't miss the deodorant I used to use and I know what I'm using is better for my body.  However, it did take some time to get used to the fact that I actually sweat now.  I'm not talking about sweating post-gym workout - that always happens even with antiperspirants.  I'm talking about when you are in a hurry to get ready for work and find everything you need for the day and have to take stuff to the car that you need for the day - who would have thought that would make you sweat even when it wasn't hot out! I know I never felt that before but after a few times you get used to it.  I'm also pleasantly surprised the natural products smell nice, feel great on the skin and leave no residue - hooray for no white marks.

I prefer the Nourish Organics Fresh & Dry Natural Deodorant Almond Vanilla because it reminds me of regular deodorant (texture, application and packaging shape), however, the Crystal Body Deodorant Stick leaves basically nothing on your skin - it is super strange and fascinating at the same time.

Weekly Wants 2015 #4

1. J.Crew Jeweled Flat Sandals - every year I look forward to buying sandals at J.Crew and usually I get more than one pair.... this year won't be an exception

2. Leith Tildon Floppy Felt Hat - as the weather in LA looks more and more like summer, it is time to break out the sun protection. What better way than investing in a few cute floppy sun hats that I can rotate throughout the season

3. Lush Ultrabland Facial Cleanser - I won't be purchasing this anytime soon as I have several cleansers to use first but I keep hearing great things so it has been added to my insanely long skincare list

4. belif The True cream - aqua bomb - yet another skincare list addition.  I've had success lately with Korean skincare products and according to Refinery 29 this is a top Korean product

Great Hair On Any Budget

I don't think I'm alone in the quest for salon shiny, advert perfect hair.  Recently I've discovered some great products that aren't perfection but sure are close... and each one fits a different budget.

INEXPENSIVE - Eva NYC Soften Up Conditioner.  The lightest of the three conditioners but still packs enough punch to leave hair soft and in better condition than before washing.  A great choice, especially because of the price, but likely lacking enough restoring capabilities for extremely damaged hair.

MID-RANGE - Caviar Replenishing Moisture Conditioner.  I love the feeling of softer, more manageable hair.  I like it even more when I can feel that happening in the shower, which is definitely true of this product.  A great thick conditioner that doesn't weigh hair down.

LUXURY - Unite Luxury Conditioner.  This is the ultimate conditioner and the best smelling...ever. However, it will break the bank, especially if you wash your hair more than twice a week.  This conditioner does everything the Caviar conditioner does but takes it to another level.  I can tell this conditioner is making a difference on my hair because my naturally frizzy air dried hair is tamer than usual.

NYC Haul

Ah, New York City.  Around every corner is somewhere great to shop.  Thank goodness I don't live there... I'd be permanently poor.  Since I was on vacation though, I did pick up a few treats for myself

Aesop Parsley Seed Mask & Rose Hair and Scalp Moisturizing Mask.  I can get Aesop in LA, and the parsley seed mask has forever been on my wish list, but I never find myself near the Aesop store.  When I spotted it in Soho I had to go in.  I picked up the Parsley Seed Mask as soon as I stepped in the door and then browsed the rest of store, making a mental note of all the products I want to try.  I couldn't leave the store with just the mask so the sales assistant sold me on the rose hair mask which is meant to be great for your scalp.
Went to the Artists & Fleas market in Brooklyn with the intention of looking at jewelry... came away with a bath product.  I love the fact that this product is handmade and is really unique.  Instead of putting the product into the bath, you fill the included bag with the bath tea oats and hang it under the tap while the water is running so the relaxing lavender scent fills the room.
Thanks to instagram I found out NYC has Rituals stores just a few days before I left.  Upon entering, I browsed and browsed and browsed some more... so much that I spent enough to get a gift with purchase.  I'm most excited about the Himalaya Scrub - a heavy duty scrub that doesn't lack in the moisture department.
Also purchased the Yogi Flow foaming shower gel because it is basically fun in a can.
Couldn't leave New York without a trip to the Bite Lip Lab.   This was hands down one of the best beauty experiences I've ever had.  The whole create your own lipstick concept is really unique and made better by the fact the quality of the lipsticks are fantastic.
What's better than one lipstick?  Two! First up, I created a matte red that suits my skin tone.
I also created a creme sheer shade with just enough color but still easy to wear and fairly neutral.

Weekly Wants 2015 #3

1. Aesop Control - two uses into the Parsley Seed mask and I already know it's a winner... must by everything else from the brand starting with the control gel for those not so great skin days

2. Maison Martin Margiela Beach Walk - I live near the beach yet I'm not a beach person, but somehow this perfume is making me reconsider my position

3. J.Crew Ryder Pants - I wear my Minnie and Pixie pants almost daily so I have high hopes that the Ryder will be my new go-to pant

4. Nike Gym Vintage Full-Zip - soft, cozy and relaxed, I want this in every (neutral) color
